The secret to longevity – Living a long, peaceful and prosperous life

There is a persistent thought that has lingered with me for most of the last few months, and it bothers on the topic of longevity. These thoughts have been about why some men attain success only to see them fall into lifelong shame and ridicule, but others seem to attain success over extended periods of time. They may have challenges along the way but over the span of a life time, their years are full of good success in career, family, society, health etc. Therefore, in this post, I seek to answer some questions. What does the Bible tell us about the secret to living a long, peaceful and prosperous life? Why is this particular (longevity) blessing a conditional one? Why do righteous people sometimes face an early death? Why do evil men sometimes seem to live in prosperity and success in this life while the righteous suffer? What does walking in God's ways, keeping His statutes and commandments practically look like? I hope you learn a thing or two as you read. Make sure you share with a loved one and encourage them to subscribe. God bless you.

Anxious thoughts and strongholds – The lies and how to overcome them

The Bible tells us not to be anxious. This seven letter word, what does it really mean? Some equate it to worry or fretting. Some equate it to fear or doubt. It could be something that robs you of peace; something that halts you in your tracks and prevents you from moving forward or taking the next step(s). For faith to exist, there must initially be an element of uncertainty or doubt. Anxiety could then be the feelings you have when you’re unable to control the outcome of a situation or when you struggle to exercise complete faith in God. Anxiety starts in the mind and could exist for legitimate or illegitimate reasons. Whatever it may mean to you, I believe we can at least agree that anxiety is a stronghold, a powerful attack on the human mind that is so negative that God tells us in Philipians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious or worried about anything…” In this post, I look at the roots of anxiety and how they can become strongholds in our lives, how to take those thoughts captive, how to permanently destroy those thoughts/strongholds, and look at six Bible characters who had anxious thoughts and the lessons we can learn from how they overcame them. Happy reading!

A wealthy, wise and beautiful wife – Abigail

In recent weeks, I've been taking detailed notes while studying my Bible. I've been reading 1 Samuel and one character whose personality stuck with me was Abigail - 1 Samuel 25. In this post, I do two things: 1) summarise my takeaways from the characters of Nabal and Abigail; and 2) reflect on Abigail's wisdom and wifely characteristics that ultimately made her attractive to her husband - a future king.

The dark side of pride – when we forget our source

God who lifts man high also brings him down. In His word, God has given us the formula to unlock the windows of heaven and how to revel in His blessings. But He’s also often cautioned us about the risk of forgetting the source of our blessings. To help whip us in line is partly why God uses silent/wilderness seasons to refine us like gold, to re-calibrate our focus to Him when we lose track, or to prepare us for the next level of our walk with Him (e.g. Moses, Joseph, David, Job, Paul, Jesus etc.).

Why did the younger often get blessed over the older in the Bible?

Genesis 48:17-19 A friend asked this question and got me thinking as it’s a repeated and interesting Bible phenomenon.  One of my thoughts is that in all these cases, God already knew the heart of the people and that’s what guided how the weight of blessings flowed.  If you look at the example of David … Continue reading Why did the younger often get blessed over the older in the Bible?

Repenting like David

Despite what we know about David's sins, why does God still say David kept His commandments, followed Him with all his heart and did only what was right in God’s eyes? 🤔 We know that in addition to David’s sin in sleeping with the wife (Bathsheba) of a trusted soldier, he also counted his army in attempt to feed his ego which angered God. These sins led to the death of Bathsheba’s first son and the unnecessary death of 70,000 Israelites. Clearly, David sinned and was punished; so, why does God still view him this way?

The secret to long-lasting, God-given success/prosperity

1 Kings 3:5-14 Solomon asked God for an understanding heart to discern justice. In response, God unconditionally made him the wisest man ever but added to this by making him the richest and most honorable king in all his days. Seeking first the kingdom of God caused God to add all other things unto Solomon. Matt … Continue reading The secret to long-lasting, God-given success/prosperity

Remembering God’s goodness from the past emboldens our faith

I Samuel 17:37 In the Christian walk, previous experiences of God’s goodness in our life is what strengthens us to take even bolder steps of faith in life. David had seen God deliver him from the paws of the lion and the bear and he was confident that the same God could deliver him again … Continue reading Remembering God’s goodness from the past emboldens our faith

Be careful who you share your God-given vision with

1 Samuel 17:28-29 The scripture reading refers to when David went to the battlefield to meet his brothers when Goliath was attacking the men of Israel and speaking pompous words. This was after David had been annointed by Samuel as the next king of Israel, passing over David's elder brothers. It would appear that Eliab, David’s … Continue reading Be careful who you share your God-given vision with
